[Blog] Ipswich and Success.
Written by superblueflude on Friday, 30th Oct 2009 10:59

Waking up this morning, I had the horrible realisation that we are currently bottom of the league.

Well I'd just dreamt about our day at Wembley, maybe changing Reuser with myself, but still you get the story.

It made me think, what has happened to this club? Go back to the late 90s we were banging on the door of play-offs, exciting football, full attendances, cheap burgers, cheap programmes. The old man in Churchmans shouting "GOLDEN GAMBLE!". Good days.

Now, although they were great days, we wanted more, we wanted the Premiership, We got there and boy oh boy didn't we have a fantastic first season. Not one person would have predicted our season, but many predicted the second.

Although we finished fifth, most realistic fans should have predicted the season to follow, but not all. No, most fans expected the same, even more, - why?

We were still small, still had mainly the same players bar, a few dodgy signings, but still some fans demanded success, I didn't.

I wanted it, but at the same time I wanted the fans to stay together and support the team through the season which from day one was going to be a struggle.

The day I realised that the support had been broken was when we lost at home, I believe it was against Bolton, boos rang out, that's right boos, Ipswich Town in the Premiership still playing the same attractive football but getting booed.

My blood boiled, for me the Premiership is a dream land, only the few teams at the top deserve to be there year in year out - that's their destiny,.For clubs like Ipswich, Hull, Barnsley, Cardiff and the rest, the Premiership is heaven, enjoy it whilst your there but don't expect to much when you get there.

We can't compete with the big guns, not at the moment anyway. We could, give it a few years with bankrolling, ground building etc.

What am i getting at? I want to ask, what gives some Ipswich fans the right to expect success, expect the Premiership, expect great signings, great coaches and great managers?

I am an ipswich fan through and through and I would love us to be in the Premiership I really would but, I enjoy every moment of every game we play in the Championship and I will enjoy every game we play even if we were in League One. Why? It's the passion of fans, sitting talking to strangers that become friends, eating the pies at half-time, walking home and pondering what ifs, the cheers of seeing a Norwich score on the board, it's the whole football day that makes me happy not the result.

So no more boos, no more sack the board, no more Keane out etc. Enjoy this season like every other no matter the outcome, because sooner or later we might get the promised land, but no matter where we are, no matter the results, no matter what league - enjoy the game, enjoy the day and enjoy being a Town supporter. Because being in the Premiership brings nothing more than we already have.

A great blog superblueflude, but surely the fans have a right to be disgruntled with the general direction of things? That said, I couldn't agree more about the boo'ing thing which, you are absolutely right, is not an Ipswich Town tradition. I guess we all got a little drunk on the early success in the Premiership and, like you say, we expected it would continue. Managing expectations is one of the big challenges in professional football and, unless you're Man Utd or Chelsea, that's a difficult balance to strike. The club has to accept that it raised the bar by sacking Jim and bringing in a maverick like Keane. The fact that the rails have come off our season thus far would give any fan of any club cause for concern. Indeed, I think, as a whole, Ipswich supporters are still more tolerant of the situation than most.

If the lows weren't so low, the highs wouldn't be so high. Which is why your Man U, Chelsea (recently) Arse and L/pool fans will never truly appreciate anything that they have ever won.

Nice piece.

This is nicely written and it's great to see such optimism, but I don't think the last sentence is entirely true, is it?

Ipswich and success don't go in the same sentence, apart from 1978!
